A checksum proves two files are byte-for-byte identical; a match means your copy is exactly what the publisher released. It doesn't prove the file is safe — only that it matches the value you were given. SHA-256 is the modern default; MD5 and SHA-1 are still common for download verification but are not cryptographically strong.
